Every deduction you’re legally owed, every deadline, in one place — updated for MTD and the 2026 dividend change.

What it is: a 9-module course + 11 working templates that gets a UK freelancer filing correctly, claiming every expense it is entitled to, and MTD-ready.

Free articles, this site’s included, tell you what the rules are. They cannot sit next to you while you file. Most freelancers hand HMRC several hundred pounds a year in expenses they were entitled to claim and never did, then discover the payments-on-account cash shock in the January after their first good year, and then, in 2026, find that MTD quarterly updates have arrived and the “gross income” test works differently from the way most blogs described it.

This is the complete system for a UK freelancer filing their own return: the decision flowcharts for registering, filing and MTD, fifteen expense categories with the trap in each, the home and vehicle maths with the break-even worked out, the quarter-close routine and the enquiry-proofing module for the week a brown envelope arrives.

What’s inside

  • The decision flowcharts: must you register, file, do MTD — with the gross-vs-profit traps spelled out
  • 15 expense categories with the trap in each (training, clothing, meals, the 7-year pre-trading rule)
  • Home & vehicle: flat rate vs actual with the £312 break-even maths and the mileage lock-in rule
  • MTD quarter-close routine + the year-one payments-on-account cash shock, solved
  • Enquiry-proofing: the 5 risk flags, the first-72-hours plan, penalty mechanics

The 11 templates

Excel toolkit (formulas live): expense tracker with category totals · mileage log (auto 55p/25p) · tax set-aside calculator · pre-trading schedule · asset register. Plus 6 editable documents: Apportionment Note, MTD quarter checklist, enquiry defence index, bad debt note, year-end checklist, accountant handover pack.

Where to start

Position yourself first, using the flowcharts, because a surprising number of people are doing MTD they do not need to or missing a registration they do. Then set up the expense tracker and the mileage log, which do the category totals and the 55p and 25p arithmetic for you. The tax set-aside calculator runs all year. At filing time, the apportionment note and the quarter checklist are the documents you wish you had kept last year.

Common questions

I already use accounting software. Do I need this?

Software records; it does not decide. The categories, the traps, the flat-rate-versus-actual decisions and the enquiry defence are judgement calls the software leaves to you. The tracker can run alongside or instead of it.

Is it updated for MTD for Income Tax?

Yes. The quarter-close routine and the gross-income test are written for the 2026/27 rules, and every Budget produces a refreshed edition sent free to buyers.

What about partnerships, CIS or non-UK residence?

Those need an accountant. The course covers the sole-trader position fully and says where it stops.

Can I read a module first?

Module 1, “Position yourself correctly”, is free on this page, uncut, with the contents page. No email needed.
